Opened on Christmas day in the Central District, the CORUM boutique is the first flagship store of the brand. Corum was founded in what could be considered a late period of time for the emergence of watch companies. The two founders, Rene Bannwart and Simone Ries, established the company in 1955 and the company quickly earned a reputation for imaginative and exciting watches. While they made a name for themselves due to their unique design, the birth of many watch production companies took place one hundred years prior to the creation of Corum. Bannwart and Ries were cousins and Bannwart’s uncle, Gaston Ries, was the first to expose the two to the field of watches as he himself had worked at a small watch company in Switzerland since 1924. Together, Bannwart and the Messers Ries were able to blend their skills of watch making and creative design to produce some of the most intriguing watches on the market. Over time, they turned their watch business from a small, private watch company into a mass manufacturing success known as Corum.

The first Corum watches were released to the general public in 1956. From the start, the watches received critical acclaim from reviewers and the general consumer market. They unarguably were off to a great success. On all Corum watches, a unique symbol is used. The tell-tale logo is a key. This key symbol may be particularly interesting to note since the company has been able to expertly open the door to commercial success and private appeal. Nonetheless, the company decided it needed a bit of rejuvenation in the year 2000, forty years into the company’s success. At this time, Corum was taken over by Severin Wunderman, with whom it was hoped that the company would be able to explode with a new period of creativity and innovation. On his own, Wunderman had established himself as a watch visionary and Corum was lucky that he has brought this experience and insight to their company. Wunderman’s son, Michael, took over as the President of the company in 2004 and together the two men, who are known to back each other up, have been working diligently to explore new watch horizons. Appointed as the CEO of Corum in 2007, Antoine Calce is bringing professionalism and business experience to the company. Corum’s motto with regard to Calce is “Unlock and Conquer” making reference not only to the skills of Calce, but also the key logo of Corum.

Possibly the most prestigious watch created by Corum would be the Meteorite watches that have been created. Only 999 dials have been created, forged from the largest meteorite that has ever landed on Earth, which fell to the Earth in the territory Greenland. Corum purchased the 34 ton meteorite deemed the “Cape York” and subsequently created these dials for only a limited number of watches. Another of the impressive watches that have been created by Corum is the $20 Liberty Eagle watch. This watch is highly coveted because it features a genuine $20 coin from the United States as the background/face of the watch. To make this watch, a $20 Liberty Eagle coin needs to be delicately split in half. Between the pieces, the watch parts are created and the halves are placed together to create the face and mechanized portion of the watch. While the use of a coin in a watch was nothing new, prior to Corum’s creation the process had only been used for pocket watches. Thanks to Corum, the coin watches were now available in wristwatch form.

Due to their progressive designs, Corum watches are easily distinguished from other watches. Corum prides itself on offering cutting-edge watch design to their consumers. The company understands that it is not realistic or impressive to base success on the creation of already existing watches. Mass manufacturing of already produced watches would not inherently lead to a watch company’s long term success since they would not be offering consumers anything new or exciting. A titanium soul

In both its movement and case, the Ti-Bridge gives pride of place to titanium, a material known for its lightness and the difficulties involved in machining it. The bridges and plates of the Caliber CO 007 are cut from this ultra-modern material. The meticulous finishing on all movements is typified by the upper bridge engraved with the “CORUM” brand name. The bridges are satin-finished, while the generously sized barrel features a snailed finish. Equipped with a balance oscillating at the speed of 4 Hz, Caliber CO 007 is endowed with a 72-hour power reserve.

Intimately linked to the movement in that it is also made from grade 5 titanium – the only kind that can be polish-finished – the curved tonneau-shaped case measures 42.5 mm by 41.5 mm. Topped on the upper part by a large convex sapphire crystal, the case has a satin-finished case-back enhanced by a central rectangular sapphire window revealing the movement. This black PVD-coated crystal subtly filters the view of the movement, offering tantalizing glimpses of the interlacing pattern of its inner workings. Comfortably cambered and water-resistant to 50 meters, the case is graced with alternating surface finishes – polished on top and satin-finished on the side.

The movement is secured inside the case by a set of two titanium “cross bars”. Screwed to the flange, which is itself integrated within the case, they contribute to consolidating the whole construction and to enhancing the aesthetic quality of this model. The openworked Superluminova coated hands guarantee optimal nocturnal visibility.

The Ti-Bridge is teamed with a crocodile strap equipped with a titanium-capped triple folding clasp. A truly precious and exclusive model, the Ti-Bridge will be issued in a limited production run of 750 only in 2009.

The Most Luxurious Watches in the World

Watches have always been one of the most prominent signs of a person's wealth and status. While their primary function is to tell time, most watches nowadays come with other features, especially digital ones. All luxury watches are of the traditional kind (with second and hour hands), as digital watches by nature are not supposed to be pampered up.

On the lower end of the price scale, yet the high end of the interesting scale, is a timepiece by Andreas von Zadora-Gerlof. The watch features a fair sized, palladium bee with emerald eyes, a pearl mouth, and yellow diamonds covering the body. For this latest creation, the price is only $150,000, easily affordable by the wealthy.

The Double Tourbillion, by Breguet, has an almost purely platinum case, and being that platinum is one of the rarest metals, the price is appropriately high. There is also a hand engraved image of the solar system, and the fact that a tourbillion is present only makes the watch more prestigious. The price is a respectable $329,000.

Girard-Perregaux is credited with making the Opera One, a state of the art platinum watch with a clear backing, so one can see all the gears and technological parts inside. Every hour on the hour, a tune (as opposed to a beep) is played to signify the transition. The Opera One is five thousand dollars short of half a million ($495,000).

The Grande Complication, by Blancpain, may have gotten its name because purchasers have a hard time figuring out how to pay for it, as it costs $785,000. The price is appropriate, though, as not only does the watch have a tourbillion, minute repeater, split-seconds chronograph, automatic winding mechanism, and crocodile wristband, but it takes almost a full year for a watch maker to put the nearly eight hundred pieces together.

There is nothing exceptionally distinguishing about the Tecnica Skeleton Chronograph by Parmigiani Fleurier, although the few people who have the funds to purchase it adore the fine platinum case and on the hour cathedral tune. At $850,000, you might put the money to better use buying a mansion.

The Classical Billionaire Tourbillion, manufactured by Corum, is almost exclusively purchased by billionaires, as its price is set at $998,000. Part of the reason it is so expensive is because only ten are in production, not to mention the eight hundred and fifty jewels that encrust it.

As if watch intricacy could not get any better, here comes along the Big Bang Chronograph, by Hublot, in conjunction with Bunter SA. While the cost is a solid million dollars, it is justified, as the watch is covered entirely in diamonds. An astonishing feature of the watch is its invisibility setting, which makes the material indistinguishable and leaves only the diamonds to be seen.

Only seven Tour de Illes were made by Vacheron Constantin, as it takes literally thousands of hours to construct, and includes a silver gold dial, pink gold buckle, and alligator band. Additional, complex features include sunset time and a second time zone. You can get all of this for the astronomical price of one and a half million dollars, which is the lifetime earnings of many middle class workers.

Luxury watch makers are still trying to come up with ways to make even more expensive watches, although how they can surpass their former achievements is a mystery.
