MONTBLANC - Writing the time of horology

Famed writing instrument maker is enjoying immense success with their timepieces. Worldtempus met the CEO of Montblanc during SIHH.

Montblanc CEO, Lutz Bethge

”For the boys inside the men”, Montblanc CEO Lutz Bethge remarked, when Worldtempus commented on the playful and innovative Timewriter 1 Metamorphosis. A watch that completely changes not only face but also functions once a button is activated on the left side of the white gold, 47-millimeter teardrop shaped watchcase.

The spectacular watch was created at the highly acclaimed Institut Minerva de Recherche en Haute Horlogerie in Villeret. A manufacturing building that was fully renovated by Montblanc in 2008 in order to meet the company’s needs for watch making of the utmost finest degree.

Montblanc Metamorphosis is a watch that deserves to be shown "live".

Timewriter 1 Metamorphosis is the brainchild of the two young independent watchmakers, Johnny Girardin and Franck Orny. Their original idea with this watch came from childhood toys, known as transformers – robotic figures that can morph from humanoid shapes into cars, aircrafts etc. Indeed a watch speaking to the inner child of any grown man who enjoys a childish approach to horology, however still made with the utmost respect to traditional Swiss haute horlogerie, exquisite materials and useful complications.

The watch offers two faces and two functions. One function is based on Montblanc’s MBM 16.29 calibre chronograph movement, the other shows civil time, when a slide is moved either up or down.

”I am truly amazed by this watch,” Bethge admitted to Worldtempus. His enthusiasm with this innovative novelty was rather obvious. ”Please, allow me to show you how it works,” he said and rushed to his laptop, activating an animation of the spectacular functions transform.

Of course a watch like the Timewriter 1 Metamorphosis does not come cheap and has a price tag of Euro 195.000 and only produced in 28 units. The price however did not scare off the retailers. ”All the watches were gone in seconds. Collectors all over the world embrace our watches. They are not only sold in specific areas,” Bethge claimed and also told Worldtempus that many of their high end timepieces are purchased by pen collectors – and vice versa: ”Funnily enough, some watch collectors are now starting to buy our pens due to the attention from our high end time pieces.”
