SIHH: Something (Really) Big From Panerai: Mare Nostrom 52mm Special Edition

Mare Nostrum is the chronograph that Officine Panerai supplied to the Italian Navy in 1943. Very few prototypes were produced – almost certainly three in total – of which first all trace, and then all relative documentation, was lost following the flood that hit Florence in 1966. Panerai’s discovery of one of the prototypes – now part of the collections at the Officine Panerai Museum in Florence – enabled creation of a new Mare Nostrum in a single edition of just 99 examples that reproduce the original almost exactly, with a few improvements.

This new edition measures 52mm in diameter and, unlike the original, it offers a sapphire display back. The case is actually tonneau shaped, but looks round due to the wide, flat bezel. The watch is guaranteed watertight to 30 meters, consistent with the original, which was not intended for use under water.

Like the original, this new Mare Nostrum uses a hand-wound mechanism: OP XXV caliber, deriving from a Minerva caliber from Panerai stock that measures 16 ¾ lignes. The balance makes 18,000 alternations per hour, the same as the Angelus movement of the prototype. Fitted with an anti-shock device, the column-wheel movement can be viewed through the sapphire back, and all the levers are polished with rounded corners.

The Mare Nostrum will launch in October with a European MSRP of 24,900 euro.

The new Big Bang Steel Tutti Frutti Rose features a fine mother of pearl dial which adds a touch of elegance. The satin-finished case is surrounded by 48 baguette-cut pink sapphires, with an alligator strap to match. The case measures 41mm in diameter and is water resistant to 100 meters. The movement is a mechanical auto-winding Hublot caliber HUB4300.

RM 017 ULTRA THIN TOURBILLON


MODERN ELEGANT LINES AND DISTINCTIVE INDIVIDUAL DESIGN











The new RM 017 Tourbillon continues the development of the highly successful rectangular case first launched with the RM 016, when its innovative case design extended the collection’s range alongside the iconic Richard Mille tonneau shape.

The RM 017 Tourbillon sets new standards on the horological scene with its ultra thin case enclosing a tourbillion movement, modern elegant lines and its distinctive individual design.

With dimensions of 49.80 mm x 38.00 mm, the RM 017 Tourbillon retains the same case proportions of its predecessor as well as the wrist fitting curvature and tapering specific to the Richard Mille collection. However, that is where the similarities end: with a total height comprising a mere 8.70 mm, the RM 017’s manual winding movement sets new standards as one of the thinnest tourbillon constructions ever created.

In addition, the RM 017 Tourbillon uses a movement baseplate in carbon nanofiber, a major innovation first tested with great success in the RM 006, an experimental model. The technical results achieved were remarkable and Richard Mille therefore decided to further expand the use of carbon nanofiber, a new material never before applied to horology, to the entire tourbillon range.




The RM 017 also continues Richard Mille’s passion for mechanical innovation. Its function selector is a further development of the mechanism originally implemented in the RM 002. This concept, based upon a car’s gearbox, offers the selection of three possibilities via a special pusher in the center of the crown: winding, neutral and handsetting. The RM 017 Tourbillon takes this a step further by offering a speed handsetting function, which on pressing the push button allows to rapidly change the hour hand independently of the minute hand.

Carbon nanofiber baseplate
This is an isotropic composite material created from carbon nanofibers molded under a high pressure of 7,500 N/cm2and a temperature of 2,000˚C, resulting in a material with high mechanical, physical and chemical stability in all directions. The ribbed perimeter of the movement plate assures the highest rigidity between the plate and bridges. Carbon nanofiber composite structures such as this are amorphous, chemically neutral and dimensionally constant within a very wide range of operating temperatures, including those outside of normal ranges. This stability assures the highest integrity of the movement’s going train under all conditions

Power reserve
72 hours.

Speed hand-setting
The speed hand-setting function, available via the function selector pushbutton in the center of the crown, allows one to change the hour hand quickly and independently of the minutes.

Variable inertia, free sprung balance
The free-sprung balance gives better reliability in the event of shocks, movement assembly and disassembly, and also guarantees better chronometric results over an extended period of time.

Fast rotating barrel (6 hours per revolution instead of 7,5)
This type of barrel provides the following advantages:
*The phenomenon of periodic internal mainspring adhesion is significantly diminished, thereby increasing performance
*Provision of an excellent mainspring delta curve with an ideal power reserve/performance and regularity ratio.

Barrel pawl with progressive recoil
This device permits an appreciable winding gain (circa 20 %), especially during the start of winding.
It also aids in the even distribution of the mainspring’s internal tension.

Function selector
In a manner similar to a car’s gearbox, a push-button located at the center of the ceramic crown allows one to select the winding, neutral, hand setting and speed handsetting functions with a simple push.
A turning display located at 3 o’clock shows the selected function: W(Winding) – N(Neutral) – H(Hands) – S(Speed handsetting).

Modular time setting mechanism fitted against the case back
Provides the following advantages for longevity and maintenance:
*Since the component is mounted outside of the movement, the time setting assembly can be changed without affecting the integrity of the bottom plate in the event of a possible defect or during maintenance;
*The mounting and dismantling of this module from the back will not require the removal of the hands and the dial.

Wheel based time setting system (back of the movement)
Provides smooth time setting functions through the elimination of engaging friction by replacing it with rolling friction.

Ceramic endstone for the tourbillon cage
This reflects a technical and long-term view towards the elimination of wear phenomena, resulting in improved technical tribology.

Central bridge in rigidified arcap
The ribbed structure ensures better rigidity for the bottom plate/bridge assembly.

Spline screws in grade 5 titanium for the bridges and case
This permits better control of the torque applied to the screws during assembly. These screws are therefore unaffected by physical manipulation during assembly or disassembly and age well.

Winding barrel teeth and third-wheel pinion with central involute profile
The central involute profile of the winding barrel teeth and pinion provides an optimal pressure angle of 20°. This promotes effective rotary motion and allows for compensation of possible variations in the engagement of the going train, thus insuring excellent torque transmission with a distinct improvement in performance.

Luminor 1950 Marina 3 Days Automatic 44mm Steel Bracelet


The 2009 Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie in Geneva marks an important turning point for Officine Panerai as it presents a new family of handmade movements designed and crafted entirely in-house. It’s the family of P.9000 movements, whose three new calibres join the existing four.

With the development of a new movement interpreted in three different versions – P.9000, P.9001 and P.9002 – Officine Panerai made its name as one of the few international high-end watch makers which design the majority of their watch movement components in-house. This is an undertaking which Officine Panerai has completed in an incredibly short time. Few other watchmakers have succeeded in developing and making no fewer than eight proprietary calibres fully operational and available in just seven years, with the design for the first calibre dating back to 2002. The three new P.9000 calibres are fitted with different functions, but they have in common automatic winding with a power reserve of 3 days and a special technical design which makes these movements immediately recognisable.


 
Luminor 1950 Submersible 3 Days Automatic 47mm, Titanium



The calibre P.9000, with 197 components, is used in the Luminor 1950 Marina models and the Luminor 1950 Submersible. The two Luminor 1950 Marina time pieces have a 44mm diameter steel case and are characterised by a black sandwich dial and a small seconds dial at 9, like the historic models. Water-resistant at depths of up to 300 metres, the first two models have an alligator strap, or the new metal bracelet, which has brushed asymmetric links rounded lengthways as well as across, but with polished points of contact. The latest version of the Luminor Submersible, thanks to the new movement, joins the Manifattura Collection for the very first time. With a 47 mm diameter titanium case, it’s a professional underwater model, watertight at depths of up to 300 metres. Distinctive features, in addition to its size, include a particularly large bezel with stud and relief markers, as well as a dial with wide baton hands – a design taking inspiration from the details of historic dials. It comes complete with a natural rubber strap.


 
Luminor 1950 3 Days GMT Automatic 44mm Steel Bracelet



The calibre P.9001, with 229 components, also comes equipped with a GMT function with 12h indicator, a seconds-reset device – historically designed for watch synchronisation – as well as a power reserve indicator, and it is used to operate two other new Luminor 1950 models. Both models are made in steel, have a 44mm diameter case, the classic sandwich dial design and feature a third hand for the second time zone in the centre. The power reserve can be read from a rotating disc on the movement, seen through the sapphire crystal caseback, and the case is water resistant at depths of up to 300 metres. Equal in size, design and features, the two models differ only in their wristband: an alligator strap or a metal bracelet. 



 
Luminor 1950 3 Days GMT Automatic 44mm Steel



The calibre P.9002 (237 components) differs from the P.9001 in its power reserve indicator alone and is used for the latest model in the new Luminor 1950 Manifattura Collection. As well as the other versions of the new family of movements, the P.9002 calibre has a diameter of 133/4 lignes and is fitted with two barrels which ensure a power reserve of 72 hours; the single-piece rotor winds in both directions thanks to an automatic ratchet device; the balance wheel with adjustment screws oscillates at a frequency of 4 Hz; the stop balance wheel device enables the time to be synchronised with a reference time signal.

A specially-made version of the case has been designed, keeping the proportions of the original but holding a slightly less convex sapphire crystal which only barely protrudes from the bezel. In this case, designed for P.9000, P.9001 and P.9002 calibres, the power reserve can be read by a small hand which moves along a circular arc on the dial – a classic sandwich design like the other models. Water resistant at depths of up to 300 metres, this watch is only available with the new version of the alligator strap.
