Breitling has issued a new version of their Chronospace quartz pilot watch. Actually SuperQuartz™ to be specific. The movement, like all Breitling movements, is COSC chronometer-certified. Passing the chronometer standards that the COSC sets is actually fairly easy for a mechanical timepiece, however, for a quartz caliber, it must be much more accurate in terms of rate. The end result is a movement ten times more accurate than an ordinary quartz movement.

At Baselworld 2010, Breitling will unveil a special version of the Avenger Seawolf Chrono – the only chronograph that is watertight and fully operational at a depth of 1,000 meters or 3,300 feet. The new Blacksteel limited edition features a 45.4 mm steel case sporting a black carbon-based treatment. The standout feature however is Breitling’s patented magnetic pushpiece system.





This system, a Breitling exclusive, activates the chronograph controls through the metal of the case, without any direct mechanical contact. This approach circumvents the Achilles heel found in traditional chronograph cases – the holes in the case and the mechanical pusher-movement interface. Breitling’s unique system eliminates the holes, allowing this chronograph to function at extreme depths. This diver’s chronograph is also equipped with a decompression valve and a glareproof sapphire crystal for optimal readability. Breitling’s SuperQuartz caliber provides a level of accuracy ten times superior to that of standard quartz movements.

 The Avenger Seawolf Chrono Blacksteel, issued in a 2,000-piece worldwide limited edition, is priced at $5015 on a black Diver Pro rubber strap, and it is also available on a perforated Ocean Racer strap.

Black is the keynote here, variously interpreted in the steel case subjected to an ultra-resistant carbon-based treatment; the unidirectional rotating bezel; the large screw-locked crown and non-slip pushpieces; and on the dial base creating a striking backdrop for the white luminescent hands, hour markers and red-rimmed counters. Its original, technical and powerful appearance makes the Avenger Seawolf Chrono Blacksteel limited edition an unmistakable standout model among diver's watches.

But its greatest feat is hidden inside its case, thanks to its magnetic pushpiece system. This means that whereas most chronographs cannot be used when diving, the Avenger Seawolf Chrono is the only instrument of this type to be watertight and fully operational at a record depth of 1,000 meters (3,300 ft). Breitling’s Chronomat B01 With Manufacture Movement

Breitling is practically synonymous with chronograph, and on May 28, 2009, Breitling will officially launch the Chronomat B01 with their new in-house automatic-winding chronograph movement, known as Caliber B01. Initially the watch will be available at only about 35 retailers in the U.S., with additional retailers coming on-line quickly. As of late March, about 2000 pieces had been produced. Production will eventually reach about 50,000 pieces annually.

Caliber B01 has been in development for 5 years, and its launch coincides with Breitling’s 125th anniversary. A new, four-story addition to Breitling’s facility at La Chaux –de-Fonds houses the caliber’s construction. The movement incorporates a column-wheel switching mechanism and a vertical clutch, two hallmarks of a well-made chronograph. The vertical clutch assures that the chronograph seconds hand does not jump when the chronograph is engaged. The B01 has central chronograph seconds, continuous seconds at 9, and a jumping 30 minute totalizer at 3. The instant-change date is located at 4:30. The date can be changed at any time, including near midnight. The movement includes a patented system for adjusting the start, stop and reset hammers. The 47 jewel movement uses a flat hairspring and a smooth balance wheel. A single barrel provides 70 hours of power reserve. The B01 ticks along at 28,800 vph, and as with all Breitlings, the Chronomat B01 is COSC-certified.

At Basel, Vice-President Jean-Paul Girardin said that Breitling decided to produce Caliber B01 to satisfy market demand for a manufacture movement, and to assure Breitling’s future. The company felt that it must have a reliable supply of mechanical chronograph movements, as this type of watch accounts for 55% of Breitling’s sales.

The Chronomat B01 measures 43.5mm in diameter and it will be available in four versions: all steel, steel with a steel bezel with four gold quarter-hour markers, steel with a gold bezel, and solid 18K (4N) red gold. A total of 18 different dials will be available The unidirectional bezel turns smoothly with 240 teeth. The sapphire crystal is anti-reflective coated on both sides. Steel and two-tone models are water resistant to 500 meters, while the all-gold model can be taken down to 100 meters.

The Chronomat B01 starts at about $6500 for a steel model on a leather strap. The opening price for the two-tone version on a bracelet is $7770. An all-gold model on a strap will start at $21,610. The B01 tops out at $44,125 for the red gold and diamond version on a red gold bracelet.

Made from Swiss components, Breitling watches are designed to be used by individuals involved in aviation, but many models are worn as high-end luxury watches. Breitling was established in St. Imier, Switzerland by Léon Breitling. The move was to La Chaux-de-Fonds, the hub of watch development during this time period in Switzerland. In 1914, Léon Breitling passed away and control of the company was passed on to his son, Gaston Breitling. Gaston was able to bring about one of the first big bouts of success that the company would see. After creating the first wristwatch chronograph in 1915, pilots were able to enjoy, for the first time, a wrist instrument. A short eight years later, Breitling was able to present the first independent chronograph pushpiece. Prior to this invention, the start and the return-to-zero functions had been controlled by a winding crown.

The company changed hands once again in 1932 as Gaston’s son, Willy Breitling, took control of the Breitling watch company. Two years later, the company released their second independent chronograph pushpiece. This creation also enabled the wrist chronograph to take on its distinctive and definitive form. Breitling’s interest in supplying aviators and professionals with timepieces reached new heights when, in 1936, the company became the official supplier to the Royal Air Force in the United Kingdom. Eight years later, the company would widen its audience as a supplier to the American armed forces. The same year, the company launched their new product, the Chronomat. This was the first chronograph that was produced with a circular slide rule.


The next major development tackled by Breitling is their Navitimer. This piece is a wrist instrument that features the renowned navigation computer. This technological advancement was able to handle all of the many necessary calculations that are present in flight plans. Quickly, pilots all around the globe understood the benefits of owning a Breitling and invested in this popular purchase. This year, 1952, also saw the implementation of Breitling clocks within the cockpits of aviation devices around the world. Eventually, Breitling was able to break through the Earth’s atmosphere as Scott Carpenter, an astronaut, wore a Cosmonaut chronograph watch during his orbital flight, which took place on the Aurora 7 space capsule.

Moving forward in innovative designs, Breitling teamed up with Heuer-Leonidas and Büren, two other highly successful Swiss watch companies, in 1969 in order to produce the self-winding chronograph movement. This advancement remains one of the most exciting breakthroughs in the Swiss watch industry. Ten years later, in 1979, Willy Breitling was replaced as head of the Breitling watch company by Ernest Schneider. Schneider had previously worked as a pilot, a watch manufacturer and a microelectronics specialist. In 1984, the company made a return to the chronograph. This resulted in the Chronomat, which became the best selling watch line ever produced by Breitling. This record remains at the time of this writing (JAN 2010). The favored features of this watch line include the sturdy case and impressive bezel and rider tabs. A year later, Breitling released the Aerospace chronograph made out of titanium, a model which was very impressive to pilots at the time.

1995 brought another technological leap to the forefront of the Breitling watches. This time, the company released the Emergency watch. Emergency has a number of features, the most impressive being its built-in microtransmitter, which broadcasts on the airline emergency frequency. Three years later, Breitling would release their most versatile chronograph watch, dubbed the B-1. At the start of the new century, in 2000, the company moved their headquarters to Grenchen, Switzerland, in a modern and impressive administration and management building, as well as their state-of-the-art production unit.

Louis Breitling founded his watch company in 1884 in St Imier, Switzerland with the specific purpose to develop chronographs and counters for scientific and industrial applications. In 1923, it was the first watch manufacturer to introduce an independent push piece for the chronograph, enabling the start and return-to-zero function (previously performed by the winding-crown). Then in 1934, Breitling added a second push piece to the chronograph enabling either cumulative or incremental time recording.

Cosmonaute Limited Edition

A limited series of the model that became the first wrist chronograph to experience space travel

1962. The space race was well under way. Already a supplier to civilian and military aviation, Breitling naturally took a keen interest in this new human adventure. Based on the Navitimer chronograph, the brand’s technicians developed the Cosmonaute, a space-going version of this instrument indicating the daily 24 hours in a single sweep of the dial. Given the extremely relative nature of day and night in space, this configuration prevents possible confusion between midday and midnight. On May 24th1962, the astronaut Scott Carpenter tested this instrument under real-life conditions during his orbital flight aboard the Aurora 7 capsule.

For its 125th anniversary, Breitling has chosen to issue a limited series of the model that became the first wrist chronograph to experience space travel. Only 1,000 of these Cosmonaute watches will be produced, all equipped for the occasion with an original version of the intriguing 24-hour dial.
