Diamond-driven time

In Opus 9, diamonds are not merely a decorative element, but the functional element of time telling. Replacing the traditional watch hands and cyclical dial, time is displayed by two parallel diamond chains, for hours and minutes. Sleek and scintillating, each chain is adorned with 33 baguette-cut diamonds, Harry Winston’s signature shape. Vivid mandarin garnets are strategically positioned to indicate the hours and minutes. Meticulously calibrated, each stone is perfectly set into the links, to ensure movement, while maintaining their brilliance. Crafted in brass, the chains are designed to maximize mobility while minimizing friction. Recalling Harry Winston’s iconic, invisible settings, the gemstones appear as floating lines of light, seamless unfolding across the dial.

Maintaining the minimalist style of the display, the chains are powered by a strong automatic movement, concealed within the case. Transforming rotational time into linear time, a rack and pinion mechanism creates the lateral drive needed to propel the continual gliding movement. Though seemingly simple, extreme balance and mechanical precision are essential to mobilize the weight of the diamond chains. While chain mechanisms have been explored before, the added weight of diamonds presents a new technical and functional challenge.

Stark and sophisticated, the sculptural case is designed to emphasize the functional beauty of the diamonds, while supporting the movement. Crafted in white gold, the frame is defined by a structural bridge, which lends both technical and aesthetic stability to the design. The central vertebrae of the watch, the bridge forms a lynch-pin lock that secures the mobile components of the watch in place, creating additional stability and shock resistance. Encased in transparent sapphire crystal, the case and movement of the chains remain visible at all angles – a poetic view of time elapsing.

Collaboration

A stunning feat of architectural engineering, Opus 9 marks the first time that Harry Winston has partnered with two, independent pioneering forces in haute-horlogerie. Both long-time Winston designer, watch maker Jean-Marc Wiederrecht, and designer, Eric Giroud, have contributed to some of Harry Winston’s most significant timepiece innovations. Opus 9 is the first time that the duo has joined forces to develop a Harry Winston timepiece design.

Cosmonaute Limited Edition

A limited series of the model that became the first wrist chronograph to experience space travel











1962. The space race was well under way. Already a supplier to civilian and military aviation, Breitling naturally took a keen interest in this new human adventure. Based on the Navitimer chronograph, the brand’s technicians developed the Cosmonaute, a space-going version of this instrument indicating the daily 24 hours in a single sweep of the dial. Given the extremely relative nature of day and night in space, this configuration prevents possible confusion between midday and midnight. On May 24th1962, the astronaut Scott Carpenter tested this instrument under real-life conditions during his orbital flight aboard the Aurora 7 capsule.






For its 125th anniversary, Breitling has chosen to issue a limited series of the model that became the first wrist chronograph to experience space travel. Only 1,000 of these Cosmonaute watches will be produced, all equipped for the occasion with an original version of the intriguing 24-hour dial. Further accentuating its distinctive character and in tribute to a modern design icon from the 1960s, the Cosmonaute Limited Edition is fitted exclusively with the rigid perforated Air Racer bracelet.

Reinterpreting the oval

In tribute to this exceptional artist, Audemars Piguet reinvents the identity codes of its contemporary Millenary line. The famous oval case, the distinctive feature of this collection, appears clothed in blackened steel. Matt zones, such as on the case middle, alternate with brilliant-polished finishing lending an inimitable shimmer to the bezel and the upper surfaces of the lugs. The ultra-complex construction of this case is highlighted by a combination of vertical and horizontal satin-brushed finishes. The polished case-back carries Quincy Jones’ signature as well as the inscription “Millenary Quincy Jones – Limited Edition”, serving as a reminder that only 500 of these prestigious timepieces are to be produced. The watch is teamed with a black leather strap fitted with an AP folding clasp – naturally also in blackened steel.

The dial features the off-centred hour zone that connoisseurs will recognise as one of the distinctive characteristics of the Millenary, surrounded on this model by a light fillet motif. Against a shiny black background, white gold Roman numerals in steadily larger sizes fill the dial, much like music fills the night hours in a New York jazz club. The minute circle surrounding the hours vividly evokes piano keys, and one can almost imagine that they are about to spring to life under nimble fingers playing a lively tune. The dial radiates refinement and sophistication, and although black might not be regarded as a colour, its subtly shaded nuances certainly create striking contrasts that boldly lead the dance on the Millenary Quincy Jones watch.

The 3120 Calibre

The tempo for the Millenary Quincy Jones watch is set by Calibre 3120, a mechanical selfwinding movement entirely designed, developed and crafted by Manufacture Auduemars Piguet. This proprietary calibre now gives its beat to the entire range of collections, from the classic Jules Audemars watches to the sporty Royal Oak models, as well as the contemporary Millenary timepieces. Distinguished by its extreme reliability, this sophisticated mechanism is the object of constant improvements. Its cross-through balance bridge ensures enhanced shock resistance while a direct-drive seconds hand avoids any jerking. The adjustment remains stable thanks to a variable-inertia balance fitted with eight inertia-blocks, which also ensures significant long-term constancy of rate. Calibre 3120 is particularly user-friendly thanks to its instant-jump, fast-adjusting date display, as well as its 60-hour power reserve. Accurate time-setting is facilitated by the fact that pulling out the crown instantly activates the stop seconds lever which – as its name implies – brings the seconds hand to an immediate halt. Nonetheless, the crowning glory of Calibre 3120 is the care devoted to its craftsmanship. Hand-assembled in the Le Brassus workshops, it boasts exceptional quality of execution and exquisite finishing. The bridges are meticulously chamfered and polished so as to show only clean-cut, shining edges. The jewel sinks are diamond-polished, while the wheels feature chamfered arms and diamond-polished sinks. Even the rim and slots of the screws are chamfered. Both sides of the mainplate are circular-grained and the bridges are adorned with Côtes de Genève. Finally, the monobloc oscillating weight in 22-carat gold bears the Audemars and Piguet family crests and the AP monogram.


Millenary Quincy Jones


An amazingly eclectic artist

Initially a trumpet player – and one of those who were determined to give jazz more interpretive freedom, more solos, more improvisation and a faster tempo – he soon also became an arranger, musical director and producer. He worked on dozens of jazz albums, but also and above all with artists such as Frank Sinatra, Barbara Streisand and Tony Bennett. In 1965, this native of the South Side Chicago ghetto made his grand Hollywood debut with the soundtrack of the Sidney Lumet film Pawnbroker – the first of many film music experiences. In parallel, he continued recording discs combining rhythm and blues, funk and pop music. 1978 brought an encounter with Michael Jackson, for whom Quincy produced Off the Wall (1979), Thriller (1983) and Bad (1987), all of which became planet-wide successes. A gifted arranger, talent nurturer and hit-maker thanks to his unerring musical flair, Quincy is also recognised for his generosity. He was the brains behind the recording of the famous We are the World humanitarian song for which he achieved the feat of uniting 46 American stars. He has also established The Quincy Jones Foundation, a philanthropic organisation committed to helping children by promoting their well-being, their health and their dignity.

Audemars Piguet has chosen to associate with this exceptional figure in developing Project Q, aimed at raising awareness among politicians as well as people in general regarding young people’s need for self-expression and the means to help them fulfil their potential. At the core of Project Q lies the Q Prize, an international award presented by Audemars Piguet and honouring a public figure or social organisation that has played a central role on behalf of children. The new Millenary Quincy Jones watch will help generate funds to support the Foundation.

Today the brand presents a new automatic diver’s watch, the RM 028, in a slightly smaller diameter of 47 mm.

Following the lines set out by the RM 025, the new RM 028 with its exceptional case and skeletonized movement possesses all the incontestable qualities that typify the watches of Richard Mille.

Following diver’s watch ISO norms 6425 with its water resistance of 300 meters (30 ATM) and a unidirectional bezel, the seemingly simple lines of the round case of the RM 028 conceal a considerable amount of technical know-how. The exceptional water resistance is achieved with a three part case construction and torque screws, with complete integration of the lugs into the case system.

Turning unidirectionally to prevent miscalculations whilst diving, the bezel is composed of three sections assembled with 22 torque screws, making it impossible to accidentally dislodge from the case.

The skeleonized automatic movement of the RM 028 utilizes a rotor with variable geometry, a major innovation of Richard Mile that allows the level of automatic winding to be adjusted to the user’s lifestyle via the setting of two 18ct white gold wings.

Like the RM 025, dedicated to the marine world of diving, the automatic RM 028 is in all ways an integral part of the collection, immediately identifiable as a typical creation of Richard Mille Watches.

The "ExoTourbillon"


January 18th, 2010 at Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie Geneva - The newest creation in Montblanc’s Collection Villeret 1858 features a delightfully surprising and trailblazing innovation. The new ExoTourbillon Chronographe is a regulator watch with a large centrally axial minute-hand, a distinct hour display, an indicator for the time in a second time zone (with day/night display), a subdial for the seconds, a chronograph with a counter for 30 elapsed minutes, and an absolutely unprecedented tourbillon with a balance larger than the tourbillon’s rotating cage and positioned outside it.

The ExoTourbillon Chronographe is the first watch in Montblanc’s Villeret 1858 Collection to unite two of the most avidly admired horological complications: a chronograph function and a tourbillon. Mastery of the difficulty of crafting these complications numbers among the distinguishing characteristics of the Institut Minerva, which has here combined the two complications in a highly unusual fashion: the chronograph upholds the lovely tradition with a column-wheel and horizontal coupling, and the four-minute tourbillon boasts a never-before-seen innovation.


But what exactly does a tourbillon accomplish? Due to the subassembly’s architecture, the center of gravity of the balance and balance-spring in every mechanical watch is never absolutely collinear with the center of the balance’s axis of rotation. This off-centeredness causes a disadvantage when the watch is in a vertical position: the oscillations of the balance are disturbed by the influence of gravity on its eccentric center of gravity. The ingenious tourbillon mechanism was invented to solve this problem: the balance is borne inside a cage that continually rotates around its own axis. The eccentric center of gravity accordingly orbits the tourbillon’s axis of rotation at this same rate. The accelerating effect caused by the Earth’s gravity on the center of gravity during the first 180° of the tourbillon’s rotation is compensated by an analogous de-accelerating effect during the second 180°. The long-term result is a movement that runs at a regular rate.

This clever mechanism underwent further optimization for the ExoTourbillon Chronographe: the balance has been separated from the cage to isolate it from the disturbing movements of the escapement. This separation made it possible to create the world’s first tourbillon in which the rotating cage is smaller than the balance, which oscillates outside the cage and on a higher plane. This architecture also inspired the watch’s name, which includes the Greek prefix exo, meaning outside. The balance in this unconventional configuration is borne between two jewels - it is neither cantilevered (“flying”) nor is it borne between two bridges - while the tourbillon turns at the foot of the axis in a two-point bearing.


The reason for this most elaborate construction is that the traditionally large and massive balance would have required a comparably large rotating cage if it had been positioned within a conventional tourbillon. A smaller tourbillon has less mass and consequently requires less energy for its rotations. The rotating cage is also freed from the weight of the balance, which further reduces the amount of energy it consumes. This architecture requires about 30% less energy than conventional constructions. The energy saved here can be used to power the chronograph’s functions.

Another essential advantage: Being separated from the rotating cage, the balance is not adversely affected by the inertia of the cage and consequently oscillates with greater precision. This innovation is entirely in accord with the statutory task of the Institut Minerva: namely, to cultivate the authentic Swiss watchmaking tradition and to combine it with ongoing innovation, thereby assuring a bright future for this noble and artful handicraft. It goes without saying that this invention has been registered for patent protection and that it will be used exclusively in the timepieces which comprise Montblanc’s Villeret 1858 Collection.

The owner of an ExoTourbillon Chronographe can enjoy the spectacular vista of a large balance (with weight screws along its rim) that’s free to oscillate in all its beauty and turns around its own axis, without being cramped inside the narrow confines of the tourbillon’s cage. With commensurate self-confidence, it proudly presents itself in a large aperture cut into the dial at the “12 o’clock” position and above a plate that has been manually embellished with circular graining.


Tourbillon Chronograph with Regulator Dial




The watch’s face boasts a typical regulator configuration. A large minute-hand and the chronograph’s elapsed seconds-hand share a common axis at the center of the dial. The subdial for the hours is shifted out of the center and occupies the lower half of the watch’s face. Additional displays portray a miniature solar system with a golden sun (the tourbillon) at the “12,” the Earth at the “6,” the moon in the form of a small 24-hour dial between the “4” and the “5” (as a day/night display for the time in a second time zone), and two other heavenly bodies in the form of the small seconds at the “9” and the chronograph’s counter for 30 elapsed minutes at the “3.” The last-mentioned display is semicircular, with two differently colored scales calibrated for 0 to 15 and 15 to 30 minutes, respectively. The tips of two unequally long and differently colored hands each serves its designated scale.


Monopusher Chronograph with Column-Wheel Control




The Calibre 16.60 is a chronograph movement with a large and centrally axial counter for the elapsed seconds, a counter for 30 elapsed minutes, a classical column-wheel and horizontal coupling. The chronograph lever is elaborately finished by hand, and the mise en fonction is likewise accomplished manually: the surfaces where the chronograph lever contacts the column-wheel and the heart disc are observed through a watchmaker’s loupe during the operation of the chronograph’s functions and are gradually and meticulously abraded to a tolerance in the hundredths-of-a-millimeter range. The steel parts and the chronograph bridge (in the “V” shape typical of Minerva’s products) are manually beveled and polished.


A finely grained stone is used to polish the lever; the bridges are manually adorned with Geneva stripes. The large and massive balance, with weight screws along its rim and a Phillips curve at one end of its balance-spring, oscillates at the classical frequency of 18,000 semi-oscillations per hour (2.5 hertz), which makes it possible to measure brief intervals to the nearest fifth of a second. The chronograph’s start, stop and return-to-zero functions are operated sequentially by depressing a button in the crown.



Second Time Zone and Day/Night Display




Frequent flyers will appreciate the fact that the ExoTourbillon Chronographe can display the time in two different time zones. The skeletonized hour-hand on the hours subdial indicates the local time, while the tip of the blued steel hour-hand points to the hour in the wearer’s home time zone. When the watch is worn in the home zone, these two hands are always positioned one atop the other; when the wearer travels to a different time zone, he or she can press the button at the “8” to advance the local-time hour-hand in single-hour increments until the hand indicates the correct local time. The current time at the wearer’s home is shown on the little 24-hour dial with day/night indicator and blued steel hand.


Collector’s Items in a Limited Edition




Also because they’re manufactured in strictly limited editions, the chronographs in Montblanc’s Villeret 1858 Collection are ardently sought rarities. This distinction is further enhanced by the extremely unusual combination of a chronograph and a tourbillon, and even further refined by the presence of a unique tourbillon construction. Only one unique piece of the ExoTourbillon Chronographe will be manufactured in platinum, along with limited editions of 8 pieces each in 18K white gold and in 18K red gold (5N).


The watches with white or red gold cases have massive gold dials on which the slender grooves of manually applied guilloche embellishment invite incident lights to dance. Delicately shimmering mother-of-pearl is inset into portions of the dial on the one-of-a-kind platinum watch. Each of the impressive 47-mm-diameter cases is high-gloss polished and fitted with an arcing bezel that securely holds a highly domed sapphire crystal with vertically falling flanks (forme chevée). A pane of sapphire crystal is integrated into the back, which is screwed to the case and protected by a hinged cover which is opened by a patented mechanism concealed between the horns.

Each watch is engraved with the words “Edition Limitée,” “Montblanc” and “Fait main à Villeret” (i.e. handmade in Villeret). The interior of the hinged cover is signed “Demetrio Cabiddu Maître Horloger,” thus identifying by name the technical director of the manufacture, who led the team that developed the Calibre 16.60. This bears the gold-filled engraving “Minerva Villeret” and can be admired by peering through the pane of sapphire crystal in the back of the watch when the cover is opened. Naturally, the Montblanc logo hasn’t been forgotten: the familiar six-pointed star, which symbolizes the six tongues of the glacier that covers Europe’s tallest mountain peak, has represented the utmost in European handcraftsmanship for many decades. The same stellar emblems, executed in genuine mother-of-pearl, grace the watches’ winding crowns.

These new collector’s items in Montblanc’s Villeret 1858 Collection are affixed to alligator-leather straps, each of which is equipped with a pronged buckle made of either 18K white gold, 18K red gold or 950 platinum, depending upon the material of which the model’s case is made.

Dynamic design meets perfectly mastered technology. Unexpected materials, a sporty look and in-house calibres are the signature of the Piaget Polo’s next generation. On this legendary collection’s 30th birthday, four titanium creations are giving it new life.

For the Piaget Polo line’s 30th birthday, the Piaget fine watch manufacture is reinterpreting this collection in an assertively modern style. Piaget unveils four new watches that are sporty and contemporary in spirit and equipped with the manufacture’s own 800P and 880P movements – a perfect illustration of the tenet that remembering the past helps write the future.

The Piaget Polo FortyFive models are made of titanium, a first for the brand. They reinterpret the original aesthetic in a case that is watertight to 100 metres, extended by a strap made of injection moulded rubber, and expanded to a diameter of 45 mm – a size both in tune with our times and reminiscent of the average length of a polo match. The case has been given a new curve that ensures a good fit to the wrist. The sapphire case-back reveals the movements, designed and developed entirely in-house.

In addition to its chronograph and flyback functions, the 880P calibre displays the hour and minutes functions, along with small seconds at 6 o’clock, the date at 12 o’clock and a second 24 hour time zone at 9 o’clock. This 5.6 mm thick self-winding mechanical movement has two barrels and a large screw balance, and offers a 50 hour power reserve when the chronograph mode is engaged. With its column wheel and vertical coupling-clutch, it has all the qualities of a fine chronograph movement.

The other movement, the self-winding mechanical 800P, displays hours, minutes and seconds in the centre and the date at 6 o’clock. Its two barrels ensure a 72 hour power reserve. It operates at 21,600 vibrations per hour (3 Hertz), fine watchmaking’s natural frequency.

Technical performance and expertise are set off by a rhythmical architecture inspired by the historic Piaget Polo model made of precious metal, but interpreted in titanium, steel and rubber with finishes playing on contrasts in a perfect echo of the collection’s historic legacy. The case material, grade 5 titanium, is particularly sturdy and light and here is worked like a precious metal. It is decorated with steel gadroons placed at regular intervals along the bezel. These elements continue along the black injection moulded rubber strap, visually accentuating the strap’s integration with the case.

The chronograph version’s crown and pushpieces are also made of titanium and decorated with rubber cabochons. The harmony is equalled only by the striking effect of the contrasts between dark and light, matte and glossy. The subtle marriage of polished and satin-finished surfaces, here newly interpreted in titanium and steel, brings out this powerful timepiece’s character even more strongly. The Duomètre à Quantième Lunaire embodies the latest in horological achievements of Jaeger- LeCoultre: it displays time with a jumping seconds hand showing 1/6th of a second increments and additionally providing the date and the age of the moon in a separate sub dial. The true genius of this watch however lies within the Dual-Wing movement concept, which features two independent power supplies: one entirely dedicated to creating a perfect timing foundation – regulated by escapement and balance –, the other solely for the display of time – hour, minute and seconds hands – as well as date and the age of the moon for the Northern as well as the Southern hemisphere. Both are synchronized through the jumping seconds hand mechanism driven by the escapement.

With the Duomètre line, Jaeger-LeCoultre breaks new ground in terms of the accuracy of mechanical wristwatches, for it devised a completely new movement structure in order to gain the highest possible precision. Therefore the watchmakers have come up with the so called Dual-Wing concept to bypass a common problem in mechanical watches: any additional complication reduces the power of the winding barrel thus depriving the precisely tuned regulation organ of a steady flow of energy from the winding barrel. The regularity of the winding barrel’s energy to the going train and escapement remains of primary importance in order to measure time with the precision demanded for today’s mechanical wristwatches.

Hence the influence of any given complication to the long-term rate of a watch can lead to deviations in time measurement hardly acceptable in such a valuable timepiece. This fact can be overcome by using a fully independent power source to run the complication, separating its power supply from that of the basic movement, which in turn is fed by its own winding barrel thus ensuring a constant flow of energy. Therefore the dual-wing concept, first introduced in the Duomètre à Chronographe in 2007, is now incorporated in the new Duomètre à Quantième Lunaire leading to a tremendous increase of accuracy in complication movements.

Their utmost attention to such details proves that the specialists at Jaeger-LeCoultre have developed a dual-wing calendar-watch of exceptional characteristics, with levels of accuracy that until now could only have been reached by watches without complications. Such a sophisticated approach to timekeeping precision is a typical advantage that 177 years of expertise in high horology can bring.

The new Jaeger-LeCoultre Calibre 381 is executed and decorated with distinguishing decors for the corresponding parts of each function of the movement. These fine details can be appreciated through the sapphire case back of the wristwatch, visually in accordance with the typical Duomètre-design: classical and understated with a touch of extravagance. Even though the watchcase houses a complex movement, its open worked dial provides clarity and ensures easy reading by being divided into two sections according to their functions: Hour and minute on the right hand side, date and moon phase on the left hand side, a central seconds hand and the jumping seconds in the lower middle of the watch.

The Duomètre à Quantième Lunaire will be produced in a limited edition of 300 yellow gold watches and in an unlimited pink gold version. The Dual-Wing Movement – a different concept of timekeeping
Since the brand’s inception 177 years ago, the quest for precision and reliability was the driving force and inspiration behind the efforts of the watchmakers of Jaeger-LeCoultre. With each new invention the Manufacture could build upon the know-how gained through the design and production of some of the most astounding movements in the history of Swiss watchmaking: the Gyrotourbillon I with its spherical tourbillon; the Master Minute Repeater with its unique sound system; the Reverso grande complication à triptyque, the most complicated swivel-watch; the Master Compressor Extreme LAB, the first watch running completely without lubrication; and the Hybris Mechanica à Grande Sonnerie, the longest sonnerie of all times. Those pinnacles of horological genius alone guarantee the Manufacture a leading position in the history books of the Swiss watchmaking industry.

For the newly developed dual-wing movement, Jaeger-LeCoultre has once again left the beaten paths in order to invent a completely new movement design that focuses on the issues of accuracy for mechanical watches with complications. In a traditional complication wristwatch any function not constantly attached to the going train makes the watch’s rate deviate upon its activation: a chronograph as it is switched on, a repeater while ringing or even a calendar function that couples just once a day into the running movement – each leads to a drop in the amplitude of the balance wheel, and a deviation in timing, as they absorb power for their own requirements. Those amplitude-changes, summed up in the course of weeks, lead to an intolerable inaccuracy in the measurement of time.

To bypass this problem, the Duomètre watches feature two independent watch-mechanisms within one calibre: one going train is serving the measurement of time and the other the operation of the complication – with both being synchronized through the jumping seconds hand mechanism, the so-called “Seconde Foudroyante”. This shared regulating organ ensures chronometer-worthy precision without interruption as no complication is coupled into the gear train of the timing device.

In 2007, Jaeger-LeCoultre launched a chronograph as first watch of the Duomètre line, the Duomètre à Chronographe. Being one of the first chronograph watches with a completely new movement constructed within the last 160 years – it was honored for its unique concept with prestigious awards from the watch world.

With this year’s Duomètre à Quantième Lunaire, the Grande Maison presents a date-mooncomplication in the dual-wing concept. It shows hour, minute, second and a jumping-second as well as date and age of the moon for the northern and the southern hemisphere. Although the Duomètre à Quantième Lunaire houses an exceptionally complex calibre with two barrels and over 369 parts, it features easy readability and a sleek design.

The Dual-Wing Jaeger-LeCoultre Calibre 381 is dedicated to achieving the highest possible precision for a mechanical movement. And thanks to its unique concept the watch reaches a level of accuracy unprecedented for complicated watches. The calibre is divided into two sections just like two wings – hence the name dual-wing. On each side sits one barrel with its mainspring guaranteeing a power reserve of 50 hours: one for hour, minute, seconds, jumping seconds, the date and the age of the moon, the other for the escapment device to ensure a constant power supply. Both springs are wound through the crown: rotating it clockwise, winds the timing barrel (escapment), turning the crown counter-clockwise winds the power reserve of the functions (hour, minute, seconds, jumping seconds, date, moonphase).

The Jaeger-LeCoultre Calibre 381 is remarkably beautiful and superbly finished. It features a large balance wheel of 10 millimeters in diameter and an inertia of 11.5 mg cm2 beating at a frequency of 21,600 vibrations per hour or 3 Hertz. And its newfound freedom in movement design represents a technical breakthrough, implemented in harmony with the noble traditions of fine watchmaking.

The jumping seconds hand
Coupling the two mechanisms via the jumping seconds hand mechanism brings advantages to this unusual watch: the watch can be adjusted to a timing signal without stopping the escapement – thereby making it even more of a precision watch.

The watch features two seconds hands. One at the center and a second one at 6 o’clock: a jumping seconds hand accurate to 1/6th of a second. Setting the time is easily performed by pulling the crown: Then both seconds hands, the center seconds hand and the jumping seconds hand jump to the zero-position leaving the escapement running. Pushing the crown activates both hands simultaneously by re-coupling into the running escapement.

Once released, the wheels of the hands simply interlock with the active mechanism and begin to turn on the spot at the speed of the clock, which is 3 Hertz. This accuracy is reached instantaneously because the balance has been breathing even with the hands on hold. Whereas with the traditional second’s stop, which freezes the balance wheel, the watch needs several minutes before it is back in its original rhythm – minutes, in which the balance wheel has to pick up speed again and which add up to a time deviation of many seconds. Thus precise adjustment with a timing signal for normal watches remains an illusion.

The mechanism behind the two hands is based on two escape wheels fixed to the same axis: one works with the lever while the other is driving the seconde foudroyante through the jumping seconds star. Upon pulling the crown, a lever is stopping the jumping second when it reaches the zero-position. At the same time a “return to zero” hammer pushes the central second’s hand to the 12 o’clock position through the use of a seconds heart cam. No other watch allows for such an accurate setting of the time, and this technical feature is perfectly in line with Jaeger-LeCoultre’s quest for even more accuracy in timekeeping.

The moon phase and date
The complication of the Duomètre à Quantième Lunaire shows on the one hand the most important calendar function – the date – and on the other hand the most romantic one: the age of the moon. The date indication runs around the sub dial on the left side of the watch. A long hand in the center indicates the age of the moon.

With the duration of the lunar cycle, the watchmakers of Jaeger-LeCoultre relied on the traditional star wheel with 59 teeth, which shows a full moon cycle in 29.5 days. Because the length of the cycle in nature is 29.53 days, an error of 44 minutes and 2.8 seconds per month (or 9 hours per year) occurs with the indicated age of the moon. It sums up to a full day in the course of three years – a deviation easily corrected through a pusher on the side of the case at the 12 o’clock position.

Sleek design and exceptional finishing
The Jaeger-LeCoultre Calibre 381 is beautifully finished to the highest standards of classical watchmaking, as can be admired through the sapphire case back: The two independent barrels are snailed and bevelled by hand, while the ratchet-wheels are brushed with sunray-patterns and engraved and gilded “Mouvement” and “heure/minute” indication respectively. The handbevelled bridges, as well as the polished sinks distinguish between the standard watch mechanism and the date-moon-complication in the dual-wing concept: the bridges of the first are held in taut, straight shapes and the latter in arabesque motives. The going trains are circular satin-brushed. The wheels and pinions feature snailed and smoothened surfaces. Flame-blued steel screws and a base plate of untreated nickel-silver highlight the complex nature of this exceptional calibre and its roots in traditional high horology.

The 42-millimeter-watch-case has the distinct aesthetics of the Duomètre collection: polished and satin brushed finishes harmonize with the cambered sapphire glass – the design having its roots in the lines of the most famous pocket watches built by Jaeger-LeCoultre. Following the Duomètre principle, the case is produced only in precious materials – as to highlight the value of the dual-wing concept. The watch will be delivered in a limited edition of three hundred watches in yellow gold and an unlimited version pink gold, both combining the traditional look of its historical predecessors with an up-to-date movement that lifts mechanical timekeeping to the demands of today.

The case, which is waterproof down to 50 meters, uses a push button at 10 o’clock to set the date and a pusher between the lugs at 12 to adjust the moon phase. The lugs of the case are formed seamlessly into the lines of the matt black or chocolate brown alligator strap with a double folding clasp.

The finely grained surface treatment of the Duomètre à Quantième Lunaire’s dial reflects purity and culminates in peerless readability. The different functions are all set apart in their own sub dials – divided according to the double-wing movement concept: Hour and minute placed on the right hand side, date and age of moon on the left, the large seconds hand at the center of the dial and the jumping second’s hand on the lower middle part.

The open worked parts of the dial allow parts of the finely decorated movement to be seen while wearing the watch, such as the two power reserve displays with their functions directly engraved on the barrels themselves. To see this exceptional movement in full bloom however, the designers have also used a sapphire glass in the case back.

In 2010, Girard-Perregaux will celebrate a double anniversary: thirty-five years of the ‘Laureato’ collection and forty years since its first quartz wrist watches. The Manufacture, now renowned the world over for its mechanical movements, also played a pioneering role in the story of quartz watches. It was in fact Girard-Perregaux that set the decisive frequency of 32,768 Hz, since adopted by all manufacturers as the universal standard.

This progressive step, at the time revolutionary, was one of the Brand's great innovations. Visionary spirit and technical progress have always been in Girard-Perregaux's genes, and the Brand has obtained almost 80 patents in the watchmaking field. It is an extraordinary heritage, a part of which is celebrated by this commemorative model.

The story of quartz

In the 1960s, Girard-Perregaux was one of the few brands to have its own Research & Development Department. It enabled it to cope with one of the greatest revolutions the watchmaking industry has ever seen: the advent of electronics, considered at the time to be cutting-edge technology in the industry. The Japanese, Americans and Swiss raced to develop applications in quartz technology, and to use them in the scaled-down dimensions required for wrist watches. Technological advances in the miniaturisation of electronic components, developments in reducing the watch's internal parts, quartz resonators and micromotors and the production of reliable batteries all made this revolution possible.

Girard-Perregaux adopted a bold stance. While most Swiss watchmakers were undertaking joint research by entrusting it to the Swiss watchmaking research laboratory (Laboratoire Suisse de Recherche Horlogère - LSRH) and the watchmaking electronics centre (Centre Electronique Horloger - CEH) from 1962, the Manufacture struck out on its own. It was then almost inconceivable for a firm to conduct its research independently. However, Girard-Perregaux confirmed its desire to ensure that its procurement was not dependent on suppliers servicing the entire industry, and also that its products were not manufactured using a movement developed as an industry standard. The firm created an Electronic Research Department in 1966. They hired a young electronics engineer, Georges Vuffray, envisaging a programme with three main steps:

- Construction of a quartz master clock
- Construction of a small quartz clock
- Construction of a wrist watch.

It also acquired new premises, machines and complex tools, and began training staff in the new technology.

The CEH's research progressed during this time: after producing the first quartz wrist watch prototypes, its aim was to get them to market as quickly as possible. Competition was also intensifying with Japanese companies, which were submitting quartz watch prototypes to the Neuchâtel Observatory.

Girard-Perregaux sped up its operations to achieve a real tour de force: at the Basel watchmaking fair in April 1970, it unveiled the Elcron, a quartz wrist watch featuring an 8,192 Hz quartz oscillator. The Manufacture managed to independently announce this discovery at Basel at the same time as the arrival of the CEH's watches equipped with the Beta 21. The following year it accomplished a new feat: the presentation of a second generation of Girard-Perregaux quartz watches, with the quartz oscillating for the first time at 32,768 Hz, a frequency adopted since then as a universal standard.

The GP-350 movement was equipped with an integrated circuit produced by Motorola, bringing together the equivalent of 300 transistors within an area equivalent to 5 mm2. Its consumption was reduced to four micro-amperes, enabling sufficient battery life. The rate error was just one minute per year. To put this development at the cutting edge of technology to the test, Girard-Perregaux submitted it to the Neuchâtel Observatory. For the very first time, quartz wrist watches passed both static and dynamic tests. Following 38 days of testing, Girard-Perregaux quartz watches were certified by the Neuchâtel Observatory in 1971-1972, testifying to their exceptional precision and reliability.

Thanks to an advanced technical design and the Manufacture's ability to put the innovation into production at a competitive price, Girard-Perregaux's quartz watches achieved great commercial success. This was especially true in the United States, where its presentation at the meeting of the 24 Karat Club in January 1972, which brought the American watchmaking elite together in New York, was quite an event.

More than 20,000 GP350 movements were created for Girard-Perregaux and for other brands. A few years later, in 1975, the Manufacture decided to devote all its progress in the field of quartz to its latest creation: the ‘Laureato’.

‘Laureato’ by Girard-Perregaux, a bold watch with a unique style

Subtly redesigned and equipped with a new quartz movement with outstanding finishes, this limited edition ‘Laureato’ brings together two areas of Girard-Perregaux's expertise: a unique style and an exceptional movement.

Aimed at collectors, this watch offers a modern take on those features that ensured the success of the ‘Laureato’ collection. Since its creation in 1975, it has embodied two of Girard-Perregaux's core values: innovation and design. Conceived to celebrate the Manufacture's technological advances, the Laureato's design was based on that of 1970s sports watches, breaking away from the classic watchmaking design traditions.

The model's design is characterised by a polished octagonal relief bezel which contrasts with a satin-finished integrated bracelet. A decade later, the first development to the model took place, adding complication movements. In 1995, the watch was completely redesigned and rebuilt to accommodate the Manufacture's GP3100 mechanical self-winding movement: it was enlarged, its bezel widened and its bracelet links took on the form of an H. In 2003, it underwent a new transformation, both ergonomically and mechanically. Numerous complications were offered, including a version with a Tourbillon with three sapphire Bridges.

The ‘Laureato’ collection thus evolved over the years, while still retaining its instantly recognisable, striking form: an octagonal bezel with elegantly alternating polished and satin-finished surfaces, and a case with matching integrated bracelet.

This limited edition further hones the model's ergonomics. Its refined profile fits beautifully on the wrist. The steel bracelet is perfectly integrated with the case. To emphasise the dynamic style, the grey dial is decorated with a chequerboard motif. The applied hour markers and the flange supporting the minute indicator add extra depth to the design. The hour and minute hands are luminescent for easier reading in the dark, while the second hand is outlined in red. This subtle touch of scarlet is echoed on the date indicator, inspired by the 1970's, and on the inscription "32 768 Hz". This is found at 6 o'clock, as a tribute to Girard-Perregaux's leading role in advancing quartz technology.

The reference to this technological advance continues into the very heart of the watch itself, which is equipped with a new quartz movement. The GP13500 naturally oscillates at a frequency of 32,768 Hz. It is produced in Girard-Perregaux's own workshops, which focus as much attention on its technical performance as on its outstanding finishes. The transparent case-back reveals the movement with its "Côtes de Genève" decoration and blued steel screws. The battery cover is customised, evoking the famous Girard-Perregaux Tourbillon and stamped with the Manufacture's logo.

With its Zero-Restart function, an innovative seconds hand resetting mechanism, the limited-edition Richard Lange “Referenzuhr” enriches the line of observation watches dedicated entirely to precise time measurement.

Just like its famous namesake, the Richard Lange watch family is fully devoted to the scientific facets of horology with a focus on the utmost degree of precision. It has its origins in the understanding that the accuracy of a timepiece reflects the competence of the master. At A. Lange & Söhne, this insight dates back far into the 19th century. With its resettable subsidiary seconds, the Richard Lange “Referenzuhr” continues this tradition. The actuation of a push piece above the crown causes its seconds hand to jump to zero and wait there as long as the push piece is depressed. During that time, a vertical disc clutch assures that the ongoing measurement of time is not interrupted – the movement keeps running. When the push piece is released, the seconds hand restarts instantaneously.

This Zero-Restart function is very useful for stopping events of short durations. It is also ideal for synchronising watches and clocks at different locations: the actuation of the push piece synchronises the seconds hand of the instrument with that of a reference clock exactly when its hand passes the 60-seconds mark (“zero”). This action “stores” the time of the reference clock and allows it to be transferred to other time-keeping instruments. The Richard Lange “Referenzuhr” pays homage to a strong-hold of time measurement that played in important role in 19th-century Dresden: the timekeeping service of the Mathematics and Physics Salon. As the “keeper of time”, this scientific institution was responsible for precisely determining the local time and making it available to the city’s population.

So in a sense, it was the predecessor of present-day atomic clocks and time signal transmitters. But in those days, the correct time had to be calculated on the basis of astronomical observations. The result was then transferred to a high-precision pendulum clock in the salon. Thereafter, this reference time was saved with especially accurate pocket chronometers and then “carried” to the public clocks. It was also communicated to persons and authorities who needed to know the precise time. Subscribers of the timekeeping service included astronomers and watchmakers as well as officials of the nascent railway system.



With its off-centre subsidiary seconds, the dial of the Richard Lange “Referenzuhr” is reminiscent of a historic precursor made in 1811 – a pocket chronometer known to have been used for synchronisation purposes by the timekeeping service. It was crafted by Johann Heinrich Seyffert who did more to promote precision horology in Dresden than any other watchmaker. His most prominent customer, naturalist and
explorer Alexander von Humboldt, purchased one of Seyffert’s chronometers for his now acclaimed Latin American expedition.

The Richard Lange “Referenzuhr” features a large balance wheel with eccentric poising weights and a Lange balance spring developed and manufactured in-house. Beating at a frequency of six semi-oscillations per second, it delivers the precision that can be legitimately expected of an instrument designed to serve the sciences. A glance through the sapphire-crystal caseback is a feast for the eyes of those who delight in technical finesse: both the Zero-Restart lever mechanism and the winding train are visibly arranged above the three-quarter plate.
